Damp and mould primarily affect the airways and lungs, but it can also affect the eyes and skin. The respiratory effects of damp and mould can cause serious illness and in the most severe cases, death. The presence of damp and mould can also affect your mental health. This could be due to worries about the health impacts of damp and mould, unpleasant living conditions and destruction of property and belongings.
We are all vulnerable to the health impacts of damp and mould, but people with certain health conditions are at greater risk of more severe health problems. You are at a greater risk if you:
Have pre-existing health conditions (for example allergies, asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, other lung diseases and cardiovascular disease)
Have a weakened immune system (Cancer, undergoing chemotherapy, people who have had a transplant or anyone taking medications that suppress their immune system)
Have a mental health condition
Are pregnant or have recently given birth
Have problems with mobility
The Government have also published guidance on damp and mould.
