Former Greyhound stadium site on track to be transformed into much needed homes in Spennymoor
Work has started at the former Greyhound track site, Spennymoor which closed in January 1998, to develop 65 homes for affordable rent.
Located to the rear of Jewsons, just off the B6288, the newly named Moulders Park comprises of a mix of two, three and four-bedroomed homes, including seven bungalows.
Moulders Park, named after The Moulders Arms which was open in the mid-1800s at the time the Brickworks were in operation, is located within walking distance of Spennymoor town centre. It provides access to extensive local facilities including schools and regular bus services, as well as a diverse range of supermarkets, shops and leisure facilities to meet a range of needs.
In partnership with Hardwick Homes, development commenced in August 2024, with completion expected by Spring 2026. All homes will be highly energy efficient featuring PV solar panels and air-source heat pumps to reduce energy consumption and living costs for tenants. Each home will also benefit from an electric vehicle charging point.
Plans for the development also include enhancements to a public footpath located adjacent to the site, popular with dog walkers and people accessing the town.
Alan Boddy, Chief Executive, said: "This is an excellent location at the heart of Spennymoor, with great transport links and existing infrastructure. This scheme represents a significant step towards addressing the housing needs of our community. Moulders Park will provide sustainable, warm, and safe homes and deliver much-needed homes to the area, aligning us with the Spennymoor Town Board's long-term plan".
Andrew Kitchen, Head of Development said: "I’m delighted to see the start of works for the development of 65 high-quality homes for social rented housing. This project, in partnership with Hardwick Homes, underscores our commitment to providing sustainable and affordable housing solutions. Each home will be built to the highest standards, ensuring comfort and security for future residents."
