As the festive season approaches, students from Whitworth Park Academy, Spennymoor are spreading holiday joy by supporting eight local food banks with much-needed items.
The annual campaign sees five year groups take part in a race to fill a household wheelie bin with as many imperishable items as possible, vital to the local food banks and pantries.
The campaign kicked off with a competition to create the best digital flyer to encourage friends and family to support and donate to the worthy cause.
In addition to the five wheelie bins, together with Mears Group, we donated £1,000 to top up the academy’s collection. Employees also donated five shopping trolleys full of food.
All food donations will be distributed among eight local food banks, pantries and food charities including St. Pauls, Spennymoor, Bright Futures, Ferryhill, Ferryhill Sports and Education Centre, Ferryhill, St. Aidens Chilton, Shildon Alive, Shildon, Junction 7, Newton Aycliffe, Cornforth Partnership, West Cornforth and Feeding Families, Sedgefield.
Graham Darby, Director of Housing and Communities, said: “We are incredibly proud to support Whitworth Park Academy's annual food bank appeal. Their dedication over the past years has significantly impacted our community. This initiative ensures that families in our community have access to essential supplies, especially during Christmas”.
Lisa Turnbull, Deputy Headteacher said: “We are incredibly proud of our children for organising and collecting items for the local food banks. Thank you to the local community's children, parents, staff, and residents for the kind donations of food and household items. We hope that our collective contribution will support individuals and families throughout the festive period.”
