Young volunteers keeping their communities tidy

The Right Thing Project, created by a group of young people from Ferryhill School aims to positively contribute to improving their home town.  An idea that flourished from a challenge set by Joy Allen, Durham's Police and Crime Commissioner to make Ferryhill a safer place to live

Working with our Livin Futures Adviser, Louise Miller, Approach Too, Durham County Council, and Ferryhill Town Council, the project began with some important life skills to help develop job descriptions and an application form to find people who would like to get involved.

They successfully recruited 16 young people from across the town, each were allocated a patch to look after and check each month for litter, fly-tipping, and graffiti.

Durham County Council provided equipment and health and safety training and their first litter pick gathered 16 bags of litter.

Glenys from Approach Too said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all the residents who came to say hello and offer encouragement and support, it is really appreciated. Thanks to Andy from Livin who came along to lend a hand and thank you to the groups of children who came over to join in and help out! if you want to come along to provide help and encouragement, you’ll be more than welcome.”

Andy Coulthard, Community Regeneration Manager said: " This was so easy to support as the young people drove this from the start. They identified the problem, came up with the idea, and are now delivering part of the solution. Local residents were really encouraging when they saw them out and about. Thanks to Glenys for developing the group and bringing this placemaking idea to our attention."

The project is well underway with residents noticing a difference around the streets of Ferryhill. Litter-picking equipment is now available from Ferryhill Town Hall.

We offer work and training support to a range of community partners and schools.
