Case Study

Kirsty Johnson - Electrical Installations Apprentice

Kirsty initially wanted to take up a career in health and beauty and spent her weekends working in a hairdressers, she had a change of heart and snapped up the chance to do work experience with operatives in our tenant’s homes. She loved the customer interaction and on-the-job learning and decided an apprenticeship was right for her.

As an electrical installations apprentice, she spends her time repairing and maintaining our properties. Every job she attends is different, from shower installs to fitting outside lights.

She will achieve a Level 3 qualification over 4 years and during this time will attend college once a week and spend the rest of the time gaining practical hands-on experience.

“Go to college and if you can arrange it, see if you can spend some time with an employer on a work placement.  This will confirm whether you are going to like it.  As far as females working in construction.  I’d say, just go for it!  Why shouldn’t we work in construction!”
